Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice

Cudeca Hospice Foundation, founded in 1992, is the only non profit independent Hospice in Spain, in Málaga, in the South of Spain. Its mission undertakes to: 1. Offer high standards of palliative care to patients suffering from cancer and other advanced or terminal disease 2. Offer support and advice to those who take care of patients throughout the illness, and after throughout the bereavement period 3. Offer a personalized response to patients and family needs, both at home and in our Centre through our caring programmes 4. Develop innovative therapies actively seeking to maintain patient dignity and autonomy so that they can have the highest quality of life possible, in spite of the limitations of their illness. 5. Give care to everyone in need regardless of race or religion. 6. Develop training and research programmes that contribute to extend palliative care and assures a constant improvement in the quality of the care provided.

It has developed a compassionate and comprehensive Palliative care program integrated in the Andalusian Public Healthcare Service, integrated Spanish palliative care provision model with the English Hospice model. It is a leading teaching institution in palliative care in Spain, and participates actively in policy development at public regional level. Cudeca Hospice Foundation is associated with the University of Malaga developing undergraduate and postgraduate training, and research. Belongs to IBIMA, Biomediical Research Institute of Malaga; and the Andalusian End of Life Research network. Since 2012, Cudeca Foundation is part of the International Collaborative for Best Care of the Dying Person, group lead by MCPCIL.

Cudeca Hospice is a multilingual organization and because of its location it treats patients of different nationalities.Costa del Sol has been a popular holiday destination over the last forty years. We receive visitors from inland and abroad. It is also a very popular area for ex-patriates form all over Europe and rest of the world. There are more than 55 different nationalities among our patients. We have an important foreign community residing in Costa del Sol, mainly from United Kingdom, France, Germany, Netherlands and Scandinavian Countries. Many of them are retired people and people with disabilities with not much family and social support and living independently. There are also rural areas with a high rate of aged population. That makes home care an important part of our activity. We have a strong collaboration with the Residential Homes of our local municipality.

The Hospice attends a population of 800.000 habitants, through a 9 bedded Inpatient Unit attending an average of 200 patients per year, 4 Home care teams attending an average of 900 patients per year, supported by a Psychological and social programme, Rehabilitation programme, a Day Care Centre, a Counselling Programme and a Volunteer Service.

As a teaching centre, trains an average of 150 professionals yearly, training is provided at undergraduate level to medical, nursing, psychology and physiotherapy students. A postgraduate palliative care course has been running since 2010 in collaboration with the University of Malaga. Specific workshops and in-house training run every year for local GPs and District nurses. We have been part of expert steering group of the Andalusian regional government developing: Comprehensive Palliative Care Strategy, Palliative Care Procedures; Core competences for advanced palliative care physicians and nurses; Basic and Advanced level training courses for health care professionals, and Information guides for the general public.

Cudeca Hospice is also a research oriented organization. Our research activities are related to: Best care of the dying in last hours of life; Complexity in palliative care, developing a tool that defines and classifies complexity; Pain and suffering; and Symptom management.

Cudeca Hopsice has its own ICT department that develop and integrate software for mHealth, caring improving and EHR, base on openEHR standard in front-end and back-end layers. The flexibility of Cudeca organization in conjunction with the ICT department provides a good opportunity for test an evaluate ICT at clinician and end user level.


We offer expertise palliative care to terminal cancer patients and patients with other life threatening illnesses, relatives assessment, counselling and support, analysis of user requirements and patient centred interventions, education and training, research and ICT development and evaluation.
