ITER TechDiv - Use of ICT to help address challenges such as ageing population

Our organisation type is:: Research institution, SME

We are active in the following Technologies: Service innovation, Hardware, sensors, actuators, Information technologies, data storage and processing (back end), Interfaces, software (front end), Communication technologies / Tele-systems, Other technology provider, Knowledge transfer, Project management

Applications: Health & wellness, Information and learning, Knowledge Transfer, Skills enhancement

Technology division of ITER (Instituto Tecnológico y de Energías Renovables) consists of a highly-qualified multidisciplinary team involved in projects related to the use of ICTs (information and communication technologies) and other state-of-the-art technologies to help society address challenges such as those posed by climate change, the digital skills gap or the rising demands of an ageing population, among others. The division has at its disposal high-investment facilities deployed under the ALiX initiative, which aims to establish a foundation for the application of ICTs and the knowledge economy. We encourage research in other areas, both within the organisation and through external collaborations. Our engineering activities (in electronics, computer science and telecommunications) and our use of state-of-the-art R&D facilities seek to overcome geographical, technological and developmental barriers.

Relevant expertise:

  • FADE - FALL DETECTOR (web). Most smartphones currently available in the market have a series of sensors to provide information relevant to the detection of certain activities: GPS, accelerometers, gyroscopes, magnetometers and others. Generating mathematical algorithms capable of detecting a person falling, based on real-time readings provided by the sensors is the foundation of an Android mobile device application capable of registering such incidents.
  • Project TICA (ACCESSIBLE INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES) [MAC 2007 - 2013 Transnational Cooperation Programme]. Main products of the project:
    • ADAPRO – ADAPTIVE PROCESSOR (web). Adapro is a multiplatform and multi-user word processor, adapted for people with disabilities such as dyslexia or autism. Its adapted, transparent and configurable interface provides an environment that inspires sufficient security to keep your attention.
    • ADVANT – ADVANCED THERAPEUTICS (web). ADVANT is a platform to support physical rehabilitation and cognitive training, through exercises that involve movement by the user using Microsoft’s Kinect device.
    • DILO – VOICE ASSISTANCE DEVICE (web). DiLO is a communicator for Android designed for users with disabilities, which enables the use of adjustable phrases to particular circumstances and routines. The app is also managed by an administrator user to set phrases and categories for later use by the end user.

  • TANGO: H - TANGIBLE GOALS: HEALTH (web). Tango: H (Tangible Goals: Health) is a motor and cognitive rehabilitation platform aimed at hospitalised children with disabilities. The platform has been developed through a collaboration agreement between ITER and the Interaction, Technology and Education Research Group (i-TED) of La Laguna University’s department of systems and automation engineering and computer architecture and sciences.
  • ADVANT+ (web). Next-stage version of the ADVANT platform and of the Tango:H. This version integrates improvements that stem from previous and new user experiences of the platform, including: Kinect 2.0 and multiplayer mode, among others.
