Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) is the largest of Ireland’s Institutes of Technology outside Dublin. The Nimbus Centre in CIT has a 100 strong research and innovation group of staff and students and a great track record in European funding with currently 8 active EU projects.

The Nimbus Centre conducts research in wireless embedded systems, wireless sensor and actuator networks, data analytics, cloud based software, and Internet of Things based systems integration. Nimbus applies platform research and technology developments in a wide variety of areas including assisted living, energy management, water and resource management, as well as agriculture and transportation (http://nimbus.cit.ie).

The ALPHA group in Nimbus conducts research and is responsible for applications of Nimbus technology in assisted living and personal health applications. ALPHA is actively engaged in research applications in national and European funding calls in the areas of Assisted Living, Active and Healthy Ageing, and Personal Health Care (http://nimbus.cit.ie/alpha/).

The Litmus Technology Trialling Centre is a vital part of the research and development supply chain addressing the areas of test, trial, pilot and demonstration within Nimbus.  Litmus has successfully provided industry and academia with testbed facilities and staff to support innovative solutions with particular emphasis on Energy, Water and the Urban and Rural Community Testbeds (http://nimbus.cit.ie/litmus/).

The Urban and Rural Community Testbed with a broad focus on Smart City technologies and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions has a central hub based in Mallow, Co. Cork. During the course of 2015, Mallow will enjoy the roll out of a research-only high performance broadband network across the town. This will see the town utilise a currently available 1G fibre connection to the Mallow Litmus office.  Litmus’ Research Assistant Piloting System (RAPS (http://mallow.tec-centre.ie/) gathers basic contact details of participants and alerts them of upcoming trials where there is an opportunity for them to take part.
