The University of Genoa is a teaching and research institution, in which academics, students and administrative and technical staff participate in the exercise of the respective competences, functions and responsibilities. The University of Genoa has a strong participation both in EC Framework Programmes (over 100 projects in FP5, 92 projects in FP6 and 114 projects in FP7) and in other important European and international research and cooperation programmes (actives projects in 2015 are 66 – European Structural Funds, Life Programme, Bilateral Scientific Cooperation, etc.).
Established in May 2012, DIBRIS  is an university department where research and education are based on the areas of Computer Science and Technology, Bioengineering, Robotics and Systems Engineering. The mission of DIBRIS is to promote and facilitate the creation (research), transmission (education), and technology transfer of the knowledge in these areas at the national and international levels. DIBRIS combines scientific and technological expertises and acts as a reference point for research, education, and technology transfer in these domains. DIBRIS is involved in many research projects funded primarily by the European Commission, Italian ministries, and private industries. In recent years, DIBRIS has participated in about 150 industrial projects, 35 international projects and 40 national projects. In the same period of time, DIBRIS researchers have published more than 1,500 papers in peer-reviewed international journals and conference proceedings.

Dr Francesco Masulli is a Full Professor of Computer Science at DIBRIS and work at the development of machine learning methods for data analysis and of systems for well-being and to thier teaching at post-graduate level. He was the PI of the recent projects "IANUS - Integrated AssistaNce on Unguarded Systems" (2013-2015), "Remote monitoring for health, safety, quality of life and assisted independence of older and fragile people" (2012-2015), "Predictive algorithms for MicroRNA target genes in cancer" (2010) financed by the European Regional Development Fund, national and local governments and foundations.
