National Institute of Geriatrics, Rheumatology and Rehabilitation (NIGRiR) is a research institute established by the Council of Ministers of Republic of Poland. Our mission is to play a crucial role in development of guidelines and standards for medical care in the area of geriatrics, rheumatology and rehabilitation and to conduct basic, clinical and applied research within these fields.

Institute is located in the center of Warsaw and employs over 400 staff members including experts in many specialties: MDs, nurses, physiotherapists, pharmacists, psychologists, public health experts, economists – many of them being professors or PhDs. We have 8 clinics, 4 scientific departments, a teaching department, central clinical laboratory, radiology department and outpatient clinics.

Our research and clinical activity involves:

  • Applied research: currently one project aiming at developing a rehabilitation game dedicated to prevention of falls in elderly and guided home rehabilitation, including compliance and adherence issues; it is financed by National Centre for Research and Development from the Smart Growth Operational Programme.
  • Social impact: currently one project funded from the Operational Programme Knowledge, Education Development dedicated to improvement of standards for early diagnosis of arthritis and improvement of cooperation between family physicians and specialists. NIGRiR is one of the leading beneficiaries of the 2016-2020 National Health Program (run by Ministry of Health). It will conduct at least 6 project from the “Promotion of healthy and active aging” V operational program and its task of “Adaptation of the health care system to the needs of the elderly” (budget of ca. 10M PLN)
  • Around 10,000 patients hospitalized annually at NIGRiR including: ca. 4,000 adult patients at three clinics dedicated to rheumatological diseases, 2,300 patients at Pediatric Clinic of Rheumatology, 1,400 patients at the Rehabilitation Clinic, 1,000 patients at Geriatrics Clinic, 700 patients at the Orthopedics Clinic, 400 patients at the Neuroorthopedic Clinic.
  • Institute`s outpatient clinic provides 30,000 consultations annually including 19,000 rheumatic consultations, 4,100 pediatric consultations, 3,250 orthopedic consultations, 1,600 osteoporosis consultations, 1,300 pain consultations.

NIGRiR is interested in participation in projects on basic and applied research in areas of gerontology, geriatrics, rheumatology, rehabilitation, immunology, genetics and public health such as:

  • identification of risks, barriers, problems that restrict activities and functioning of seniors in society (both holistic and field specific approach - we specialize in health aspects),
  • development of technologies, services, procedures, processes and solutions that prevent exclusion of the elderly from social life and encourage their involvement,
  • development of personalized medicine based on new diagnostic tools.
